Milwaukee County Zoo

miniature mammal and bird display

In 1892, the Milwaukee County Zoo opened for business as a miniature mammal and bird display in Washington Park.  It turned out to be a very popular attraction, and by the turn of the century it had blossomed into a zoo with over 800 animals on 23 acres of land.

For the next 100 years, the zoo continually expanded and finally ended up moving to a new 190 acre wooded site.  The Milwaukee County Zoo is now home to more than 2,100 animals and 348 species.

Their objective is to pass along an appreciation for all animals, as well as the conservation of their differing habitats.  The vision of the zoo is to be a leader in animal management, conservation, research and education.  They strive to keep a wholesome environment while reaping the admiration of citizens and other zoos all across the globe.  The Milwaukee County Zoo’s mission is to inspire a better understanding by the citizens through support and participation in the conservation of animal species and their environments.

management and conservation effort

They seek to improve the quality of their professional development, administration and operating environment.  To share their knowledge so they may reinforce the human animal earth bond.  They strive for the organization to be self sufficient financially.  They want to foster physical, psychological and social development for all the animals in their care.  And finally, contribute to a world wide animal management and conservation effort.

The zoo has several major exhibits.  The Aquatic and Reptile Center, Herb and Nada Mahler Family Aviary, Taylor Family Humboldt Penguin Exhibit, North America Exhibit, Northwestern Mutual Family Farm, Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country, Africa/Asia South America Exhibits, Sterns Family Apes of Africa, Primates of the World, Small Mammals, Winter Quarters, and their newest fun event, the Wild Connections: Animal Encounter Tours. The Milwaukee County Zoo is a place where nature and wonder meet!

The Harley-davidson Museum

Milwaukee, Wisconsin is celebrating over 100 years of  history with Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It started with a teenager named William S. Halley working in the town’s bicycle shop. As an apprentice, years later he drew up plans for an engine that could be adhered to a standard metal bicycle frame.  Later he teamed up with his longtime friend Arthur Davidson, creating the company we all know today, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. In 1910 The Harley-Davidson Motor Company went from a small Milwaukee startup to a global success story by 1920.  When you visit Milwaukee, you have the opportunity to visit the only Harley-Davidson museum in the world that attracts approximately 300,000 visitors annually. The highly visible 130,000-square-foot complex consists of three buildings on 20 acres along the Menomonee River bank.  The motorcycle company ceased operations on this site back in 1973, however the Juneau Avenue facility serves today as the company’s corporate headquarters and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Within the museum you will see hundreds of thousands of artifacts and more than 450 Harley-Davidson motorcycles and from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s 110-year history.

When you arrive at the museum you cannot help but notice the Burke Brise Soleil that sits directly on top of the building resembling a soaring gull with the grand wingspan of a jet.  This movable fixture shades the glass-domed Windhover Hall below.  When the wind reaches 23 mph or above this magnificent work of art closes its wings with automatic sensors.
