Things to do in Marquette

Sugarloaf Mountain

Located about six miles north of downtown Marquette you will find Sugarloaf Mountain. There are two hiking routes that can take you up the mountain. The “difficult” route will take about 15 minutes to complete. The “easy” route takes a little longer, but you will find both routes have rocky terrain.  As you get closer to the top of the mountain you will find the trail switches to wooden stairs that take you to a final viewing area. Here you will see century old forest canopies along with a magnificent view of Lake Superior.

Address: County Road 550, Marquette, MI.

Dead River Falls

Running wild for half a mile the Dead River Falls is just west of Marquette and has three magnificent waterfalls that are considered the best adventure the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has to offer.  A half mile hike is 90 feet across and is considered a steep up and down hike.  There are three major drops with vertical heights as tall as 15 feet entwined within a number of smaller falls.  The hike starts out on an incline then the trail runs along the west side of the river.  In the low water you will be able to walk on rocks to reach the other side of the river .

Address: U.S. Highway 41 West, Suite 300, Marquette, MI 49855

Marquette Harbor Lighthouse

Located on Lake Superior the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is one of the most scenic lighthouses in the Upper Peninsula and is still navigationally active by the U.S. Coast Guard today. The 1866 Marquette Harbor Lighthouse’s bright red half brick structure has an attached 40-foot square brick tower that holds a fourth order Fresnel lens. Overlooking the rugged trune of the shoreline along Lake Superior the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable structures in the county.

Address: 300 N Lakeshore Blvd, Marquette, MI 49855

Presque Isle Park

Located on the north side of the city, Presque Isle Park is Marquette’s most popular park. Mostly forest, the 323 acres park is located on Lake Superior.  The park’s design was created by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New Yorks’ emphamis Central Park.  Concerts are held at the wooden bandshell and other park amenities include a marina and Moose Nature Center.  You will also find playground facilities, walking and skiing trails, a gazebo and park pavilion, concession stand, picnic tables and barbeque pits for you to use.
