Get to know Little Current, Manitoulin, Ontario

  • The name “Manitoulin” means “spirit island” in the Ojibwe language of Anishinaabemowin.
  • Manitoulin is the largest island to be surrounded by fresh water in the world..
  • Manitoulin is only one of approximately 32,000 islands located within the Great Lakes.  Most of the islands remain uninhabited today, however around 30 islands have permanent residents along with summer cottages for transient visitors.
  • Manitoulin has 108 freshwater lakes that also contain their own islands, that also have ponds within them.
  • In 1913, the Current Swing Bridge was built.  Almost 100 years later, the bridge is heavily used by vehicle traffic and is the only land link to Manitoulin Island.  Back in 1901 the bridge was taken over by the Canadian Pacific Railway and it was decided that the bridge would remain open at all times for marine traffic, with the exception of an occasional train passing through.
